‘Breakfast of Champions’ celebrates another No. 1 ranking for

Championship celebrations are nothing new at the University of Florida. That’s the case not only for Gators athletic teams, but also —which has yielded nearly 8,000 graduates since it was launched in early 2014.

The University of Florida’s success was recognized by U.S. News and World Report, where earned the top online bachelor’s program in 2026. It was the third time claimed the coveted top spot. U.S. News and World Report also named the top online bachelor’s degree program for veterans, and those twin titles were recently celebrated by the university community at the “Breakfast of Champions” event in Gainesville and livestreamed for guests.

“We brought home the titles and earned them through the hard work of the people in this room,” UF Interim President Donald Landry told guests, from a podium flanked by dual championship banners. “Our foundation in online education is so deep, so strong and guaranteed to be most enduring.”

has grown from five majors across four colleges in 2014, to 28 online programs across 10 colleges in 2026. Over that time, enrollment has grown from nearly 600 students to over 4,200. has drawn students from 48 states and Washington, D.C., as well as 70 countries—as far away as Australia, South Africa, Singapore and Malaysia. The program’s youngest graduate so far was 16 at the time of graduation, the oldest 79.

“ has opened the door to UF to students who would never have been able to do it in person,” Provost Joe Glover told attendees. “I’m confident that will continue to grow, expand and reach more students with a quality online education.”

University of Florida Interim Provost Dr. Joe Glover speaks on stage at celebration.

Gators just the same

In 2013 Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, Will Weatherford, led the push for a high-quality yet affordable set of fully online baccalaureate degree programs and turned to then-UF President Bernie Machen to make it happen. “Our reputation was on the line,” Glover recalled, “and we had to deliver.” Andy McCollough, UF’s founding Associate Provost for Teaching and Technology, would be charged with making it a reality.

UF made two key decisions at that time which would be crucial in helping its online program stand apart. First, there would be no line separating online students from those on campus—they’d all be Gators just the same. “Online students would earn the same degree as brick-and-mortar students, with no difference in their quality of education or the diplomas that certify it,” Glover said. And second, online students would learn from the exact same faculty who taught students in person.

“We knew you could deliver quality education not just in person, but also online,” McCullough told the crowd at the event. “We were cognizant of Florida citizens who could not come to Gainesville. They had commitments wherever they may be. So, we began to visualize the possibility of .”

The results speak for themselves. The program’s mission of expanding high-quality and affordable online education is evident in the fact that 70 percent of students graduate without taking out loans. McCullough, now Associate Provost Emeritus, recalled being stopped in a North Carolina supermarket by a salesman who thanked him for the opportunity to earn his degree through .

“I’ve had those kind of encounters so often,” he said. “Every time I have one, I want to let everyone at know the impact they’re making on the world.”

Every step of the way

Chris Rapozo certainly felt that impact. The keynote speaker at the Breakfast of Champions, Rapozo completed his public relations bachelor’s degree through in 2022 while working full-time and helping raise two children. From the beginning, has maintained a 250:1 student-to-academic advisor ratio, signaling the vital role that academic advisors play in the success of online students like Rapozo.

“There were nights when I questioned my decision to go back to school with two kids and a full-time job,” said Rapozo, joined in Gainesville by his wife, Kara, and children Kate and Joseph. “I wanted to quit more times than I like to admit. But I knew where I was headed, and I had to take the next step. As to what step to take, I leaned heavily on my academic advisor. She walked with me every step of the way.”

graduates have gone on to work in fields including healthcare, technology, government, nonprofit, finance, aerospace, education and professional services. Alumni work at leading organizations such as Google, Microsoft, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, the PGA of America and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“My senior year I switched to the degree program so I could go work at an internship,” Christina Sanchez, who earned a business administration degree in 2024, shared in an  played at the celebration. “By the time I graduated, the relationships I had were strong enough for them to offer me a full-time position. I wouldn’t have the job I have now if it wasn’t for earning a degree with .”

What’s next for the No. 1-ranked online bachelor’s program? Melissa Allen, Director of , shared with attendees UF Online’s 2026-2030 strategic plan, Unified Momentum, which will focus on three student-centered priorities: Strengthen the System, Elevate the Student Experience, and Deliver Sustained Excellence.

“As we look toward the future,” Allen said, “we have no plans to slow down.”

Students Lead High-Impact Research Through the University Scholars Program

When Ayana Price started as a Microbiology and Cell Science major in 2022, she never expected her undergraduate research would be patented by UF and honored as a university innovation. Guided by Dr. Raquel Dias, Price joined the University Scholars Program (USP) to pursue a computational biology project, reshaping her academic path.

“Before the program, I knew I enjoyed research, but USP showed me that I can ask meaningful scientific questions, contribute to analyses and impact projects,” she said. “The experience confirmed career goals and made them feel attainable.”

For  students like Price, research is not limited by location. Through flexible learning pathways and programs like USP, online students across majors can conduct independent studies, collaborate with faculty mentors, present at symposia and contribute to impactful scholarship. Their achievements illustrate research opportunities available to students and how the University Scholars Program bridges online learning with hands-on discovery.

How  Students Study Abroad

For students, education isn’t confined to a screen—it happens anywhere in the world. Maddy Durand, an English and Psychology double major, spent a full academic year at University College London navigating bustling libraries, historic classrooms and London’s vibrant culture while working toward her UF degrees. Nora Gibbs, a Geography: Environmental Geosciences student, explored Scotland and England for a week, touring museums, trekking the Highlands and connecting her family heritage. Their journeys demonstrate how students are seizing international opportunities that broaden their knowledge and perspective.

“Study abroad immerses you in new environments, connects you with other students and broadens your perspective,” Gibbs said.

Turning Cities into Classrooms

Exploring new cities allows students to connect their coursework with real-world history, science and culture. For Durand, London became a living laboratory where English literature and psychology met daily life. Through a  offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, she spent an academic year taking courses that counted toward her UF degrees while exploring one of the world’s great literary cities.

“I picked University College London because it checked off all the boxes academically and would allow me to stay on track with my double major aspirations,” she said.

Durand’s experience as a PaCE student helped prepare her to thrive in new environments and take ownership of her education.

“PaCE broadened my awareness of the fact that learning can be holistic and expansive,” she said. “Tremendous learning occurs when I actually walk through museums, study in historic buildings and work alongside people in culturally momentous organizations.”

For Gibbs, the UF faculty-led, short-term program  in Scotland and England offered a hands-on complement to her online coursework and a chance to connect with her family roots.

“I saw the one-week trip as the perfect chance to explore my heritage while learning from the country’s rich history and world-class museums. Seeing exhibits on the history of cartography and collections of rocks and minerals in person, not just in textbooks, was incredibly inspiring,” she said.

Study Abroad Opportunities for Students

All UF students, including those enrolled through , are eligible to participate in study abroad programs as long as they are in good academic standing, have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and are not in their first semester.  leaders encourage students to begin exploring programs early and reach out for individualized support.

“Students should consider factors like the program’s length, location, academic focus, potential language barriers, and projected costs when selecting the right experience,” said Jess Mercier, Assistant Director of Outreach & Marketing for UF Study Abroad.

students can explore a wealth of study abroad programs, including UF-sponsored programs, UF Exchange programs, and non-UF programs. Programs vary in length, location, academic focus and cultural experience.  students can  with Study Abroad Advisors and attend  for support selecting a program that aligns their goals.

“Students [studying abroad] build adaptability, problem-solving, and cross-cultural communication—skills they’ll use in both their careers and everyday lives,” Mercier said.

Discovering Personal Growth Abroad

Living abroad challenged Durand and Gibbs to grow personally as well as academically. Durand found that navigating London’s walkable streets, crowded libraries and public transportation reshaped her sense of independence and community.

Nora Gibbs.

“Developing, sustaining and fortifying friendships in a place where everyone can walk or take public transport together is a game-changer,” she said. Learning to study and create in another country also helped her build resilience and adaptability, skills that will serve her well beyond her time abroad.

Capturing unique moments with her film camera, Gibbs relished the opportunity for in-person connection with a new place.

“It was amazing to finally see Scotland in person—there’s such a deep sense of history and culture everywhere you go. As someone who studies online, getting the chance to connect with a place physically rather than through a screen was really powerful,” she said.

Durand and Gibbs’ study abroad experiences exemplify how students leveraged their online learning experience to make education truly borderless.

“Online learning isn’t a pair of handcuffs—it’s actually an entrance ticket to engage with your community in a unique, independent and customizable way,” Durand said. “If even a tiny part of you wants to go abroad, honor that and follow the curiosity. It is an experience that will change your life.”
