Advantages of a Criminology Degree

A degree in criminology provides a comprehensive understanding of crime by integrating key disciplines such as sociology, psychology, law, and public policy. The interdisciplinary degree coursework explores the development of laws within society, the motivations behind criminal behavior, and societal reactions to law-breaking. Students gain essential research and communication skills while analyzing societal structures and the complexities of justice.

Law Enforcement Officer

Law enforcement officers serve as the backbone of public safety, working to uphold the law, prevent crime, and protect their communities.  Law enforcement roles are available at local, regional, and statewide agencies, ranging from city police officers and county sheriff鈥檚 deputies to state troopers. Whether patrolling neighborhoods, investigating criminal activity, or responding to emergencies, they face unpredictable challenges that demand quick thinking, resilience, and dedication.  To prepare for these high-stakes situations, officers undergo rigorous training in physical fitness, tactical strategies, and legal procedures, mastering skills such as firearm proficiency, defensive tactics, and crisis intervention. A criminology degree further enhances an officer鈥檚 expertise by providing critical knowledge that strengthens their ability to effectively serve and protect. A bachelor鈥檚 degree can also open opportunities for promotion and advancement for law enforcement officers.

Criminal Investigator

Criminal investigators help process and analyze crime scenes.

A criminal investigator helps solve crimes by gathering criminal evidence, interviewing witnesses, and conducting thorough research to uncover the truth. They work closely with law enforcement agencies to collect physical evidence, analyze data, and piece together information to build strong cases for prosecution. Criminal investigators often specialize in certain types of crimes, such as homicides, fraud, or drug trafficking, requiring precise knowledge and investigative techniques. A criminology degree provides a solid foundation in criminal behavior, investigative methods, and legal procedures, helping investigators navigate the complexities of the justice system while seeking justice for victims.

CIA Analyst

A CIA analyst plays a crucial role in national security by collecting and analyzing intelligence to support government decision-making. Using a variety of sources and methods, including surveillance, open-source information, and classified reports, CIA analysts assess threats to the U.S. and its interests, providing key insights on foreign policy, military strategy, and global security issues. Successful analysts must also excel in communication, presenting their findings clearly and concisely to policymakers, while maintaining a high level of confidentiality and security. A background in criminology equips individuals with the research, problem-solving, and data analysis skills needed to thrive in this challenging and high-stakes environment.

DEA, FBI, or U.S Border Patrol Agent

A DEA, FBI, or U.S. Border Patrol agent safeguards national security by enforcing federal laws related to drug trafficking, organized crime, immigration, and border security. These agents conduct investigations, gather intelligence, make arrests, and work with other law enforcement agencies to combat criminal activity. Whether working on drug interdiction, counterterrorism efforts, or securing borders, agents use advanced investigative techniques, surveillance, and forensic analysis to disrupt criminal operations. A criminology degree equips agents with the skills needed to navigate intricate cases and contribute to the protection of the country鈥檚 peace and security.

Probation or Parole Officer

Probation and parole officers supervise people who are placed on probation instead of serving time in prison or people convicted of crimes following their release from jail or prison. These officers help people convicted of crimes reintegrate into society while ensuring compliance with court-ordered conditions. They assess the needs of probationers or parolees, develop rehabilitation plans, conduct regular check-ins, and monitor behavior to prevent recidivism. Probation and parole officers work closely with courts, law enforcement, social services, and rehabilitation programs to support reintegration. A criminology degree provides a solid foundation in criminal justice theory, law, and behavioral science, providing probation and parole officers with the expertise needed to guide offenders toward successful rehabilitation while ensuring public safety.

Court Clerk

A court clerk helps the judicial system run smoothly by managing administrative tasks in the courtroom. Clerks assist judges, attorneys, and court staff by organizing case files, scheduling hearings, maintaining records, and ensuring all necessary documents are properly filed and accessible. Court clerks also handle the processing of legal documents, such as subpoenas, warrants, and motions, and may assist in maintaining courtroom order during trials.  A criminology degree is the perfect first step to enter this career or advance in this critical public service role.
